What is the Thinking Behind the Tamas Interest?

The wide and varied reports linking Celtic with Auxerre's Romanian Centre Back Gabriel Tamas are too many and too loud to be ignored. The fee has reportedly been agreed and the player is said to be mulling over Celtic's wage offer with stories emanating that the player is said to be 50-50 as to whether he will sign for the Champions.

The question for me is this; if Tamas signs whose place in the team will he be taking? I think we can safely assume that at a fee of 3M plus he has not been signed as cover, and since one of the central berths is currently taken by the Club Captain one can safely assume that Gary Caldwell's Jacket is on a shaky peg.

I am writing this without the benefit of having seen Tamas play so I don't know what attributes he will bring to the team but my question is this; Does Gary Caldwell deserve to lose his place?

This is a debate that will be a no brainer for many Celtic fans who feel the defender with the giant cranium is too much of a liability to be in a Celtic defence but after his commanding performances of the second half of last season and his undoubted ability of picking a pass and starting moves should he really be cast aside so quickly?

It may well be that the manager has decided to introduce more competition within the defence (any chance of competition in the left back slot Gordon?) or it may be that Strachan is looking to rotate the squad as much as possible throughout the campaign. So trying to second-guess a manager renowned for eccentric decision-making is probably as pointless as a condom machine in the Vatican but it doesn't help the mind wandering and asking the questions.

Time to pop off to the message boards to debate this one further methinks!

Yours in Celtic
