Transfer windows – The Glasgow Celtic way

Close season – You have got to love it!

Now that the dust is settling and it would appear that Celtic have finalised the bulk of this summers activity we now look ahead to whom else may be causing the revolving door to turn in an anti-clockwise direction? And more importantly what impact any departures may have not only on the squad but also the budget available to WGS for this, the only important window of the season.

Since we have taken off the robbers mask following the £1.25 million sale of Craig "light-bulb ankles" Beattie one wonders how much we would be able to sell our other unwanted/un-needed players for? If Beattie were worth 1.25 Million, what would Jarosik and Gravesen bring in the way of transfer fees? Add to that the thought that Miller should also inspire at least a six-figure transfer fee then we could arguably re-coup all monies spent on Brown and Donati with the sale of fringe players! Add to that other potential exits for the likes of Zurawski and Balde (although I would retain the services of the latter) and we could turn a profit in the close season for a second year running!

I we were to sell Gravesen and Jarosik we would leave ourselves rather short of midfielders however.

I am of the opinion that we require an experienced European Striker (Maakay would have been ideal) and a Centre Half with experience in the Champions League. I have no fears of going into Europe with McManus and A.N.Other beside him, as long as it isnt Stephen Pressley! I also believe that Mick still has a bit to learn and would only benefit from playing alongside a Centre half of renown.

We are also short of cover in both of the wing back positions. Lee Naylor was a revelation last season and far exceeded expectations but what if he was to get injured. Also lack of competition can breed complacency in a position such as wingback. The purchase of Doumbe would allay any fears in this department but we need to work fast to secure his signature.

So all things considered the hard work really begins here; we have stolen a march on our rivals home and abroad by getting our main targets in before the start of pre-season training, but the Sharp Suited Man still has a shift to do.

Yours in Celtic
