Strachan Re-iterates Signing Policy

Gordon Strachan has again hinted that Paddy McCourt may be Celtic's only new arrival this season as he reiterates his policy that he will not sign players just for the sake of it, or because the fans expect it.

Strachan said"We either get good players or we don't bother."

"If we don't get anyone, I'll just get on with it and work with the players we have."

The manager has also stated that the players he has coming through the ranks at Celtic could get their chance to shine in the new season, stating "Caddy is there, Cillian is there and Gowser is there.

"Mark Wilson is coming back and will be like a new player while Georgios Samaras is now with us full-time.

"Supporters want to see players arriving, of course they do.

"It's like kids when they went for sweeties years ago.

"One says: 'I want sweeties' and another says: 'I want sweeties as well.'

"Everyone wants a new toy and we're trying our best to do it, but do we just say: 'OK, here's a player' to keep supporters happy?

"Don't get me wrong, I'd like to get a couple of new players in, but if it can't work, it can't work.

These words will hardly inspire a great deal of confidence within the support, but like anything strachan says I prefer to take with a pinch of salt rather than getting upset about the patronising comparison to a child wanting a treat. Although the latter comments are a tad ill-advised the point remains the same - the manager will only consider players who will be able to make an immediate improvement in the team and will not gamble just because he is pressured into doing so.

I do hope though that Strachan does not make the same errors as last season by failing to ensure that suitable cover is available for all positions. Whilst he could be forgiven for not predicting that every full back at the Football Club would get injured at the same time, the lack of competition in the left back position was a costly reminder that resting on your laurels is not a good tactic in football.
