Strachan on how to win away European Ties!

Last updated : 16 September 2008 By Clydebuilt
Gordon Strachan has stated today that he will not shirk from dropping big name stars from his starting eleven to ensure success on the road in Europe. Strachan has hinted that some of his players may have not carried out his instructions. Whether or not this is some cryptic clue as to who will start in tomorrow's opening game is anyone's guess.

"You have to be more patient away from home - more thought must go into it.

"We cannot play the same style of football that we do in the Scottish league. We have to change our system and because of that change you have to leave out some good players who normally play.

"You have to convince those players that what you are doing is for the bigger picture.

"Because of our signings this year and because of our practice in pre-season, I think we'll have a better understanding of what to do away from home.

"In pre-season, we played at Feyenoord and at Porto and changed the system while registering good results.

"That's unusual for us in preseason - in fact it's unusual for us anywhere away from home.

"Maybe now Celtic have the same ability at Parkhead but possess something different in order to get points away from home."

Strachan also commented on Celtics opponents in the group stages "There are great variations in this group, real differences in style of play.

"Manchester United are European champions, Villarreal have been magnificent for the past few years while the Danes are likely to be a more pragmatic side.

"Then you have us - there is something of the mongrel about us. We have everything in us in that Celtic can play it almost every way imaginable - nothing absolutely brilliant but we can play most styles of football."

Hee Hee I quite like that analogy. We do have a little bit of everything within us, but I would like to think that firstly and foremost we are a footballing side, willing to play the ball on the deck and if the effective and cutting passing and movement that has been a signature of our play this season continues then we could be a hard team to beat, both home and away!

Yours in Celtic
