SPL referees to have shirt numbers

Last updated : 20 July 2006 By M boin
SPL referees will have the number 23 on their shirts for this season according to the SPL. This is to let fans know that the referee is important and to help them earn the respect of the players and the fans.

We thought at first that this was a wind up but heck no, it seems to be true. There were allegedly plans to give all whistlers their own squad numbers which the referees could pick themselves but seemingly there were a few who belonged to the same Lodge (water buffaloes we have been told) and they all wanted the same number so plans were scuppered.

The Daily record  today quoted referee supervisor Donald McVicar as saying : "We want to highlight the fact there are 23 people on the field at any given time during a match - 22 players and the referee"

So what next? will we have Nil by mouth sponsored yellow cards? Or maybe just have four quarters instead with each quarter sponsored by a different company?. What ridiculous idea will the SPL come up with next?
