OLD FIRM PULL PLUG ON SPL TV CHANNEL

The Old Firm have united to scupper plans for the new proposed SPL - TV deal that was due to launch at the start of next season.

At a meeting at Hampden Park today the 12 member clubs of the SPL voted
10 - 2 in favour of the new SPL channel, however the two dissenting votes from the Old Firm meant that the project could not go ahead as a unanimous vote was required to proceed.

What happens next is anybody's guess, though it looks likely that Celtic will push ahead with a deal involving SKY to show all the club's home games live next season. This would bring in more money than they are already receiving from SKY and would be a guaranted sum, unlike the proposed SPL deal which was dependant on attaining a huge amount of subscriptions.

The other clubs in the SPL may decide to break away from the Old Firm and this could put at risk Celtic's Champios League berth next season as they would not have a league to represent. This, of course, is a worse case scenario and there might yet be some sort of compromise between the clubs.

At the moment, though, there is no TV deal for any club and the loss of ninety million punds worth of circulating revenue cannot be good for the game.

It will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few days or weeks as clubs search around for alternative sources of income.
