Mowbray: I'm waiting on my captain to reveal himself

New captain Scott Brown?
Not yet says Mogga
Dynamic midfielder Scott Brown made his first appearance in over three months during Celtic's 1-0 defeat at Rugby Park and immediately caused controversy when he took the captains armband from Dutch centre-back Glenn Loovens. To transfer the armband during a game is virtually unheard of unless the captain himself is injured/ substituted but the general assumption was that, following the loan transfer of Stephen McManus to Middlesbrough, Brown had been made club captain.

It now seems that this assumption was wrong and that the boss has yet to appoint a new captain. Tony Mowbray didn't say whether Brown was instructed to take the armband against Kilmarnock, or whether the sometimes hot-headed midfielder had taken it upon himself to assume control, instead the manager insisted that he had yet to make a decision on his on-field leader. "I think the captain will emerge from the group." he said today. "We'll have a chat with one or two players and see their feelings. Some enjoy the burden of captaincy and some don't. We'll find out as we go along."

Despite the frustration of falling further behind the Huns in the title chase Mowbray is convinced that his squad is stronger than ever following his radical overhaul during January - he brought in eight new players and shipped out seven - and that he now has the quality to create true competition for a starting berth in his first eleven.

"You don't see it sometimes." he said "But apathy does creep into football, players who do expect to be on the team-sheet every game. I'd like to think we've created a situation where nobody in the team now can expect to see their name on the sheet unless they are performing and contributing to a winning team."

The Celtic boss said that the players who were culled from the club during January were not suited to his ethos, to the way he wants his side to play. "Every manager has his own idea of the strengths and weaknesses of individuals," said Mowbray. "I'm just trying to select players who can play in the way we want to play and whose assets marry into the way we want to play. Some very good footballers and good guys have left the club because, in my mind, they don't fit the way I see the game. The ones we've brought in, hopefully, will be more of a fit and suitable for the way we want to play. What we need to do now is gel this team together and get the talented individuals into a formation that works for the team."
