McManus Warns New Recruits of Taking the SPL Lightly

Celtic Captain Stephen McManus yesterday warned any new recruits that coming to Celtic is not a retirement home where players can play out the remainders of their career. Speaking at the launch of the new Celtic Away Strip, which features a yellow jersey with the famous Willie Maley quote regarding the Celtic ethos of tolerance printed on the inside collar McManus also thanked the support.

Mick said, "Unless you have come from Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal, players won't understand the pressures of what it is like to play here in front of 60,000 fans who are demanding success constantly.

"One thing is for sure - players who are maybe coming to the end of their career and who think this will be a nice wee place to play your football should know that it's not like that.

"Scottish football is not a backwater. It is probably the opposite; it is a good place for hungry young players who want to be successful."

McManus also had praise for the tremendous support that the team enjoyed in the run-in and stated that he believes the fans did their bit to ensure 3-in-a-row. He said: "I have no idea what happened to the fans but in the last seven games of the season they were tremendous.

"From the game against Motherwell away when we won 4-1, they seemed to give us an extra 10%.

"Every one of us came in to the dressing room after that game and couldn't believe how good our support had been.

"People don't realise how important the fans can be but that was one of the things that pushed us on."

Yours in Celtic
