McDonald in Seventh Heaven as he is handed the Hallowed Squad Number

Scott McDonald will become the next Celtic player to attempt to fill the Jersey of Henrik Larsson. Two players have attempted to fill the Jersey vacated by the Swedish legend in 2004 to no avail and this resulted in many calling for the squad number to be retired after the passing of Jimmy Johnstone - another famous wearer of the lucky number 7.

First off was former World Cup winner Juninho, who was signed by Martin O'Neill from Middlesbrough the season after Henrik left. The diminutive Brazilian came with a successful pedigree but was not given enough of a chance and he quickly faded into obscurity before moving on. A terrible miss from inside the six yard box at Tannadice summed up a disappointing spell for the player.

Next up was Maciej Zurawski, a player who undoubtedly had talent and ability but seemed to suffer from a lack of confidence and, at times a lack of effort. Zurawski looked like a legend in the making when you viewed footage of him on youtube. He looked like a powerful pacy forward who seemed to burst past defenders and rocket shots into the roof of the net. He had a decent spell at the Club but failed to live up to the expectation that his previous exploits alluded to and quickly became a target for fans discontent throughout last season.

He did leave us with a final parting gift however, coming off the bench to score a penalty in the shoot-out against Spartak Moscow in last years Champions League Qualifier.

So what next for our young hero? Will the weight of expectation on his shoulders to surpass his scoring exploits from last season and live up to the number on his back be too much for him?

I don't think so, I think Skippy will thrive on it next season and continue to exceed expectations.

Yours in Celtic
