Martin O'Neill - Scotland's Manager Of The Year

Tonight, Martin O'Neill will be presented with the award for Scotland's Manager of the Year, for season 2003/04, by Scottish sports writers.

This season, O'Neill has proved himself the best in the country. He has made this great team what it is, in the last year or so.

In the summer, the only player brought in was Michael Gray from Sunderland, on a 6 month loan deal. Gray hardly set the world on fire, and there were many angry Celtic supporters.

However, with the previous season's purchase of Stanislav Varga for free, as well as the breakthrough of youngsters Liam Miller, John Kennedy, David Marshall, and most recently, Aiden McGeady, we have seen this squad develop into a great prospect.

The purchase of Stephen Pearson at the beginning of the year was a shrewd move by O'Neill, Pearson was named this season's Young Player of the Year.

The biggest task we have now is to keep Martin O'Neill at Celtic. He is still only on a year's rolling contract, which will be renewed annually. He must be given cash in the summer, to bring in new faces to the club. With the departure of Henrik Larsson now looking definite, the board must give him the cash to spend.

I believe that if there was no prospect of money available, Martin O'Neill would not be at Celtic. He wants to take Celtic to the next level in the Champions League, and cannot do that with the current, ageing squad, and no transfer funds.

Let's raise a toast to the man who has made it all possible this season - Mr Martin O'Neill!
