Loss of Second Champions League Place Could be Blessing in Disguise.

With Scottish Football’s stock at an all time low this country is in the precarious position of being leapfrogged by Belgium in the race for Champions League places.

If the remaining Belgian representatives in the Europa League manage between them two wins and one draw out of their 6 ties in February then we will be leapfrogged by Belgium in the coefficient stakes.

At first glance this looks like bad news for Scottish football and therefore bad news for Celtic, but I would argue that this is actually a GOOD thing for the SPL and could be a great thing for Celtic,

However we must ensure that we keep our eye on the prize for this to happen, and whilst we must recognise that we are in the strongest position off the pitch at the moment we should take nothing for granted. Indeed if we the support, and more importantly those in power at the Football Club do not take domestic success for granted then we could see a real progression over the next few years.

Lets face it, the SPL at the moment is a dead duck, and with no real signs of change it has become a stagnant vehicle for Celtic and Rangers to earn their right to European Football. However could this two horse race be made all the more exciting if it were to become a winner takes all pot of European gold?

Further to that, would the incentive of a 10m plus bounty cause one of the other SPL teams to raise their head above the parapet and mount a serious challenge for the title?

We must acknowledge that we are poised to take the drivers seat in Scottish Football at the moment, and the need to consolidate of off the field success by monopolising the on the field glory has never been more evident. If we can win the league for the next three seasons then regardless of what happens with our rivals we can guarantee ourselves all the riches of Europe.

For this to happen however we cannot take our eye off the ball, either via complacency or board decision and the time to build a full team unit is in our own hands. Indeed if the board wanted to do the very least amount, surely buying a couple of Europe class central defenders is the key?

Yours in Celtic
