Augustin Binya, the Benfica midfield player, has been banned by Uefa for six matches following his dangerous challenge on Celtic's Scott Brown.

The Cameroon international was sent off after 85 minutes during his side's 1-0 Champions League defeat at Parkhead.

Martin Hansson, the Swedish referee who dismissed Binya, described the tackle as one of the worst he had seen.

Brown said after the match: "He obviously tried to do me as hard as possible." The Scotland international avoided injury but accused Binya of trying to break his leg, although the Benfica player later apologised..

Uefa's control and disciplinary body announced their verdict after deliberating the case on Thursday.

In a statement on uefa.com, Binya's challenge was described as one which "seriously endangered the physical health of the opposing player".

Benfica can appeal against the decision, but if they are unsuccessful Binya will miss their remaining Champions League Group D matches against AC Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.

He will also miss Benfica's next four matches in Europe, and the ban will carry over to future seasons if the Portuguese side finish bottom of Group D and are eliminated.

In other news, we here that Ganea, the thug who almost ended John Kennedy’s career has been given an unparalleled 22 match ban for assaulting a linesman during a league game.
