Joy for goalie's fiancée as police find 'moron'

"A 27-year-old woman is subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal for wasting the time of the police"
Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor's fiancée was today arrested at her west end home and charged with wasting police time. Her solicitor was present at Glasgow's Stewart Street police station where she was interviewed under caution. Strathclyde Police have confirmed the arrest. "A 27-year-old female is subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal for wasting the time of the police." said a police spokeswoman. The police are no longer investigating the alleged attack on the Rangers goalkeeper.

In the wake of the controversial goalie's assault in Glasgow city centre last week, in what now seems to be a case of domestic abuse, media pundits were falling over themselves in their haste to drag Celtic fans into the equation. Talksports Adrian Durham even called for last weekend's Glasgow derby to be postponed because, in his opinion, McGregor had been attacked by Celtic fans and therefore we were gaining an advantage but it seems Leah Shevlin's wish that 'the police better find those morons before I do' has come true and that our supporters are now in the clear. We await Durham's next broadcast in anticipation of his profound apology.

Celtic fans were also put forward as likely suspects last month when another Ibrox player, DaMarcus Beasley, had his £65,000 BMW firebombed outside his home - until it was revealed that Beasley's own troubled love-life was the most likely cause of that attack too. According to the Daily Record the huns midfielder had been involved in a relationship with a woman whose boyfriend was connected with leading underworld figures in the city and this had led to "tensions". You probably remember the media apologising profusely for falsely accusing our support of being involved. No, me neither.

Newspaper reports shortly after the McGregor incident quoted unnamed 'friends' of the player who were said to have found him lying battered in a city centre lane after he was 'ambushed'. "He was headbutted in the eye." said 'the source' "It was a really vicious attack. His face is a mess, it is very swollen and bruised. His eye is completely closed. People were panicking and there was worry he might have been attacked with a blade. It turned out he picked up deep scratches on his back."

A few days later the story changed and it was Shevlin, and not anonymous friends, who 'found' the battered McGregor. And the location also changed - now he was bleeding on his own doorstep and not in a city centre lane. "Leah Shevlin revealed that she discovered the Rangers keeper slumped unconscious in a pool of blood on the street near their home." bleated the Sun. "The horrific sight greeted her as she returned to the plush apartment in Glasgow's West End in the early hours of Sunday. The frantic 26-year-old managed to bundle the player, who had suffered wounds to his face and body and had his clothes ripped up to their flat."

The news of Shevlin's arrest came as no shock - except maybe to the sympathetic media who gave us 'poor, distraught Liah's' account of events last week. Both she and McGregor were questioned by police a few days ago over alleged inconsistencies in their statements and it's thought that CCTV footage from the Seventh Heaven lap-dancing bar and from neighbours of the couple contradicted their version of events. It is still not clear whether or not the shamed goalkeeper is sticking rigidly to his 'I know nothing, I remember nothing' statement.
