Hamilton Wonder-kid Puts Target on His Back with International Decision.

Highly rated Hamilton 'wonder-kid' James McCarthy has today decided to commit his international future to the Republic of Ireland. James, who has played for ROI at under 17, 18 and 19 levels, has ended speculation about his future with the decision to accept Giovanni Trapattoni's offer of a full cap.

The following statement was made by a Hamilton spokesperson on his behalf:

James is flattered by the genuine interest shown in him by Billy Stark and George Burley in recent weeks with a view to him being selected by Scotland," read the statement.

"However, he is now in his third season with the Irish set-up, having already represented them at 17s, 18s, 19s and 21s, despite still being a month short of his 18th birthday. James feels he would be letting too many people down by switching from the Irish at this stage.

"He is content to end the speculation and now just wishes to concentrate on his club commitments with Accies."

This is a brave decision to make. No doubt he will be well aware of the hatred that Aiden McGeady has had to endure from both the Press and also from supporters of other Scottish Clubs in relation to him electing to play for the ROI. Some fans even wrote a cheery little ditty in honour of those whom they refer to as 'plastic paddies' that has since been deemed racist.

Let's hope that the fall out surrounding this decision will be reduced given that he is not the first player to make this move. That notwithstanding he will still be subjected to his fair share of bile and vitriol.

Yours in Celtic
