Forster is regarded as one of the best young keepers in Britain after shining at Celtic during two successful seasons on loan before completing a permanent move to the Scottish champions earlier this year.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has insisted for some time that the former Newcastle player deserved international recognition, but the 24-year-old had been keen to play down his chances while he focused on his form with the Glasgow club.

Now he has finally been named in Roy Hodgson's squad, Forster can't wait to link up with his new international team-mates next week ahead of Friday's clash with San Marino at Wembley.

"I'm obviously delighted and happy to get the call-up," he told Celtic's website.

"I'm excited as well and just looking forward to meeting up with everyone really. It's a great opportunity and a great chance to test myself against some great players.

"I got a call from the gaffer yesterday to let me know he thought it was going to happen and then I found out for definite today so I'm thrilled.

"I think it's recognition for the work we've put in and our performances, so I was delighted to get it and it is another incentive to keep pushing on and working hard."

Forster will compete with Norwich's John Ruddy for the role of established number one Joe Hart's understudy and he added: "It's something I've aimed for and worked towards and I'm just delighted to get the call-up.

"It probably won't sink in until I have been there and done it though."
