Classy Celts Cruise to Victory in Coop Cup

Celtic took the next step in the long walk towards domestic glory last night with a resounding 4-0 victory over Livingstone at Celtic Park. Strachan elected to re-jig his side bringing in Loovens, Caddis, Donati, Hartley, McGeady and McDonald in to freshen things up and counter injury. The very fact that Celtic managed to play entertaining and attacking football with a real cutting edge whilst fielding a team bereft of many first picks was heartening, although a lot of the flair that was on show could be attributed to one man - Georgios Samaras.

The big Greek really is on fire at the moment, with his pace and directness causing mayhem to defences across the country and long may it continue. What also impresses me is his work rate and willingness to get involved in every bit of play possible and this must make him the first striker on the team sheet for as long as he is fit.

The first goal came from an unlikely source though as Sean Bean look-a-like Glenn Loovens turned in an impressive Paul Caddis cross with his head. Celtic probed and hustled in the first half without creating a whole lot of clear-cut chances. The best moment of the first half was seeing Samaras knock the ball past the hapless Livi left back and storm past him Agathe-style only to see the clever cross that he had intended for Skippy to get cleared.

Into the second half Celtic started to really turn the screw and young Caddis really should have done better when he was released by a perfectly weighted ball from the super Greek. The big hitman finally got the goal he deserved and the floodgates really started to open and every time Samaras got the ball it appeared that a goal was pending.

He collected a pass inside the box and in one fluid movement he controlled the ball, pirouetted 180 degrees and slid the ball through to Scott Brown who coolly lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper. What a pass! What a move! What a goal!

Samaras then got his second, coolly despatching a penalty that was won by Shaun Maloney after some impressive footwork by the diminutive striker and he really should have got his hat-trick after Scott Brown returned the favour and played him in perfectly but Samaras' attempt to draw the goalkeeper to ground were in vain and the scoreline finished at 4-0.

So who was man of the match? Well obviously it could only be one man, big Sami but special mention has to go to the Green Brigade whose novel and funny ways of supporting their team were as entertaining as the match! Special mention should also go to the two stewards who were attempting to 'man mark' the Brigade in the second half!

Yours in Celtic
