Celtic-Mad End of Season Awards

Last updated : 29 May 2003 By Kevin Smith
Season 2002/2003 has been a super season, although we have nothing to show for it. Reaching the Final of the UEFA Cup is Celtic's biggest achievement in many years, and managing to push Rangers till the last day of the season for the title shows our squad's determination.

I, along with many other fans, have had one of my greatest seasons supporting Celtic. Despite the lack of silverware at the end of the campaign, I wouldn't swap my season for a Rangers supporters' for a minute.

From the first game of the season against Dunfermline, up until Kilmarnock last Sunday, the SPL title race has been thrilling. And despite being knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by FC Basle, our European run has been a magical adventure, the Bhoys seeing off teams from Germany, England and Spain.

I have decided to place an awards page from a personal point of view. Obviously everyone has different opinions, the following reflect on the joyous season I have had.

Hail Hail!

Celtic-Mad Player of the Year: A few contenders for this one, most notably Henrik Larsson, Alan Thompson and Bobo Balde. John Hartson has also had another great year, but with over 40 goals again this year, HENRIK LARSSON has won my vote as Player of the Year.

Celtic-Mad Young Player of the Year: I don't think there can be any doubts about this one. Jamie Smith has come along well this season, but SHAUN MALONEY has proved that he can come in and do a job for the first team this year.

Celtic-Mad Most Improved Player: There are also a few contenders for this award. Alan Thompson has improved dramatically this season, and Paul Lambert showed that he has still got the class to perform at Europe's highest level, but BOBO BALDE has shown what a difference a year makes - coming from a liability in defence to a solid as a rock defender.

Celtic-Mad European Game of the Season: Celtic's UEFA Cup run has brought many great memories for all fans, Blackburn away stands out, as does Stuttgart at Parkhead. Seville was by far the best game for atmosphere, but the result was heart-breaking. LIVERPOOL at PARKHEAD has been my own favourite, for atmosphere and the football being played. ''You'll Never Walk Alone'' before the game was enough to win the vote itself.

Celtic-Mad SPL Game of the Season: Once again, there has been a few crackers, the huns at Parkhead when John Hartson scored the winner, and Motherwell away, where the Hoops won 4-0 recently. But for the biggest party of the season, and one of our best performances, RANGERS at IBROX at the tail-end of April is the winner. We were in the UEFA Cup Final and we let them know, beach balls, sombreros, lilos, Euros, we had it all! The huns must have been physically sick.

Celtic-Mad Moment of the Season: I think seeing HENRIK LARSSON banging in two goals in Seville was my proudest moment as a Celtic fan this season. We were in the Final and the world was watching, Henrik showed them what he can do.

Celtic-Mad Arse of the Year: There are many, many candidates for this one! As always, the regulars are there: Hugh Keevins, Barry Ferguson, Gordon Smith, Graeme Souness. But the winner, or loser in this case, has to be the EDITOR of the DAILY RECORD. This guy tried to break Celtic with his tv appearance and his 'Thugs and Thieves' headline in January. However, the story proved to be lies and nonsense, when all the Celtic players involved where proven not guilty. Furthermore, the Editor has recently 'left' the Daily Record, due to the Celtic boycott of the newspaper, I think he has had the door opened for him!

Celtic-Mad Man of the Year: Was it ever going to be anyone else but MARTIN O'NEILL. Taking us to a European final and getting us through this season has been the ultimate achievement, it was just a pity we couldn't win the UEFA Cup for him.
