CELTIC V RANGERS PREVIEW

Last updated : 07 March 2002 By
Sunday sees the third Old Firm league encounter of the season, and the fourth in total when you take in to account the CIS semi final.

Celtic hold the upper hand with 2 wins in the league and, indeed, it has been one year and four months sine the Ibrox men last recorded a league win over Celtic. That will be something that Alex McLeish will be trying to resolve but he will meet a Celtic side in determined mood as they home in on the league title for the second year in a row.

Both sides have injury problems to contend with and it looks as though this factor could have a telling part to play in the final outcome to this game.

Celtic will be desperate to get Henrik Larsson back playing, he has missed the last two league games, as he has a fine scoring record in recent Old Firm games. They will also be keen to see Joos Valgaren and Bobo Balde restored to the defence.

Chris Sutton is looking highly unlikely to feature so it looks like O'Neill will have to go with a partnership of Hartson and Larsson up front - given that Larsson makes it in time.

Rangers are also hoping that their injuries will clear before Sunday. Key midfielder Ronald De Boer is said to be struggling though and he could well miss out. Skipper Barry Ferguson is also carrying an injury but it is thouhgt that he will make it in time.

In all, the teams are very evenly balnced at the moment and it would only be a fool who would try to predict the score - so, here goes, Finbar's fearless forecast is for a scoring draw, something along the lines of 2-2.

Rangers home advantage will work in their favour but Celtic will be well up for this one given that the title is within grasping distance. Of course, Celtic have the luxury of being able to lose and still be able to maintain a 10 point gap at the top, whilst Rangers are playing for pride only.

Like all Old Firm games the team that wants it the most will get the victory but I will stick by my forecast and go for the draw.
