CELTIC CHAIRMAN SPEAKS OUT AGAINST GANG OF TEN

Last updated : 22 April 2002 By
Celtic chairman Brian Quinn has spoken out for the first time since the collapse of the SPL TV deal.

In a frank statement, Quinn has pulled no punches in letting the gang of ten clubs know where Celtic stand on this issue:

'It is quite dishonest to believe there would not have been debts arising from SPL TV.

'The Old Firm generates 80 per cent of media interest in Scottish football and receives 40 per cent of the revenue - these are the facts, they are not threats and they are not debating points.

'The vision of the future for Scottish football as outlined by the Gang of Ten is of a league with smaller squads, fewer skilled players and which plays a minor role in Europe.

'Celtic want no part of such a set-up - we still want success in Europe. Our vision and ambitions are greater than that.'

The war of words over this issue are bound to continue over the close season although it seems certain that sooner or later a compromise will be reached. There are already rumours that Rangers may be considering joining the gang of ten and resurecting the SPL TV concept, if that were to happen then a true civil war would break out in Scottish football.
