Atmosphere in Celtic Park

Last updated : 15 August 2006 By D Scott
Once more the debate involving the atmosphere at Celtic park has surfaced on our messageboard and we thought we would throw it open to see if the wider Celtic audience can shed some light on the reason why it is so bad.

Saturadys game against St Mirren was without doubt the worst atmosphere for many a year and despite 56000 people in attendance Celtic were outsung by the away support. We have a few theories about why the atmosphere is so bad but they are wide and varied and we are failing in our efforts to come up with a definitive answer so we thought we would ask YOU what you thought the reasons were. Here are some ideas we already have and perhaps you may agree with some of them.

THE TEAM IS CRAP (didn't go down well this one)
Celtic don't play with the verve they used to and they dont play for the jerseys anymore. The crowd dont feel part of the club anymore.

SEATED STADIA MEANS YOU CANT STAND NEXT TO YOUR MATES
People who wanted to sing at the game used to be able to go to the jungle and meet their mates and belt out songs. Random seating arrangements mean that people who want to sing are often seated amongst people who dont want to sing so the songs fade away

THE SPL IS BORING
Most of the games bore you to death. With the exception of a few games a season all teams defend and its like watching paint dry

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS HAS STOPPED ALL THE GOOD SONGS
A lot of the songs that the crowd used to sing are now frowned upon so the atmosphere suffers, we just dont have really good songs anymore.

THE TEAM NEED TO ENTERTAIN ME
Football has changed nowadays and blind support doesn't cut it anymore. I pay a lot for my season book and nowadays there is much more I can be doing. The world has changed and there is now many other things I could be doing. The team need to entertain me because thats what sport has changed to

I think that the lack of atmosphere may in fact be due to a combination of all the above. Perhaps it's not a bad thing as it does mean that when the atmosphere does light up it makes it even more special.? perhaps not.
