Less then five months after bringing in the receivers, Motherwell produced a result to stun Scottish football when they deservedly destroyed Celtic's perfect league record this season.

Pleasingly for the cash-strapped Lanarkshire club, youth proved the key to this victory as both goals were scored by teenagers.

A diving header by substitute Shaun Fagen staggered the champions with 13 minutes to go.

Then Celtic defender Ulrik Laursen conceded a penalty when he hacked down man of the match, Jamie McFadden. He got up to send keeper Rab Douglas the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Motherwell had looked strong from the very start and a dangerous early cross from Stephen Pearson almost found Dirk Lehmann at the back post.

Four minutes later Pearson did it again and McFadden also saw a goal chalked off when he was adjudged to have handled the ball.

But the best chance of the match so far fell to the visitors as Paul Lambert set up Henrik Larsson to produce a poor finish which enabled Stevie Woods to save easily.

Pearson and McFadden linked up again and Pearson's left-footed half-volley finished just the wrong side of the bar.

McFadden's bright red hair spelled danger for Celtic every time he was involved and his skilful turn and cross had Douglas at full stretch.

Woods made an even better save in the 28th minute from a powerful header by Joos Valgaeren but he was also lucky on three occasions before the break when the normally reliable Larsson wasted opportunities to put Celtic ahead.

Larsson yet again and winger Didier Agathe both failed to find the target with headers early in the second half and the longer the game stayed goalless the more Motherwell began to sense the possibility of an upset
