Celtic 5-1 Livingston

Celtic today defeated Livingston 5-1 at Celtic Park. With Rangers losing 2-0 away to Dundee United, Celtic are now 16 points clear at the top of the SPL.

Alan Thompson's name was on the scoresheet twice, Stephen Pearson, Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton made up the rest. The Bhoys are now unbeaten at home in 72 games.

The sun was shining down on Paradise as the teams emerged, Jackie McNamara was absent due to an injury and was replaced by John Kennedy. Neil Lennon took Paul Lambert's place from Thursday night.

Stephen Pearson started the proceedings, he tapped home an unselfish pass from Stanislav Varga on 13 minutes to put the Hoops 1-0 in front.

Livingston were not just present to make up the numbers, Rab Douglas made a couple of decent saves as the Celtic defence once again looked in dissaray.

There was a weird atmosphere inside Celtic Park, the crowd sat in silence for most of the first half, only bursting into short cheers when Celtic scored. The biggest cheer of the night was arguably when news filtered through that Dundee United had taken a 2-0 lead at Tannadice.

Celtic's second goal came from Chris Sutton, shortly after Henrik Larsson had a goal chopped off for a foul by another player. Sutton pounced on a Henrik Larsson knock down from an Alan Thompson free-kick, to double Celtic's lead on 37 minutes.

There were angry groans around the stadium when Livingston managed to pull a goal back through Stuart Lovell just before half time; Lovell stood unmarked to smash the ball past a helpless Rab Douglas.

Celtic Park stookd in applause for former captain Paul McStay, who appeared to make the half time draw. There have been many recent arguments as to whether McStay was an overated player or not, but 'The Maestro' is a true Celtic Legend in my book.

It didn't take long for Celtic too add to the goals tally. Four minutes into the second period, Chris Sutton provided a neat assist for Alan Thompson, who curled home with his right foot.

Henrik Larsson must have felt left out and decided to add his name to the goalscorers list. This time it was from an indirect free-kick inside the Livingston area, after Roddy McKenzie picked up a back-pass. After a touch each from Thompson and Stan Petrov, The King placed the ball into the net.

It was game over now, and Martin O'Neill had the ultimate luxury of substituting both Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton with over 20 minutes to go. Momo Sylla and Craig Beattie were their replacements.

In truth, Livvy played terrible today, most of the damage done was self-inflicted. After Craig Beattie was fouled inside the box, Alan Thompson chipped a cool penalty kick into the net, to make the scoreline Celtic 5-1 Livingston.

Five goals is just what we needed today, setting us up nicely for our midweek trip to Prague, and the visit of the Forces of Darkness, a week today.

Celtic-Mad Man of the Match: John Kennedy

Celtic-Mad Moment to Remember: The realisation that we are now sixteen points clear, as the PA System played "You're Sixteen!"

Celtic-Mad Moment to Forget: The Celtic Park playing surface, which looks worse for wear.
