Celtic 0-0 AC Milan

Celtic's European campaign for this season is over. Tonight's 0-0 draw at home to AC Milan, coupled with Barcelona going down 2-0 in Donetsk, leaves us bottom of Champions League Group F. AC Milan finished first in the group, followed by Barcelona. Shakhtar Donetsk progress to the UEFA Cup.

We have done well in this season's Champions League. We've held the two favourites to win the competition to draws but lapses in concentration have cost us so dearly. At Champions League level there is no place for giving the ball away needlessly because as we have found out, you will be punished.

When you look at the lack of investment in our team, we have done ourselves proud during this campaign. The players and manager should take a bow, as arguably, we shouldn't even be on the same park as teams like AC Milan and Barcelona.

When the draw for Group F was made, we all knew what a massive task we faced. We can go out of the Champions League with our heads raised high.

It was the same starting line-up from Saturday's 2-1 win over Hibs. Well done to the fans for arriving early, and making the atmosphere electric as usual on Champions League nights. AC Milan fielded a strong side, but rested Kaka and Gattuso.

Celts started brightly but bear in mind we were up against one of the best defences in the world. Too many times we were punting the ball upfield which suited Milan perfectly.

Aiden McGeady was the bright spark in the Celtic side, and he came close with a long-range drive early in the game. His skills seemed to be dazzling the Milan defence, and lit up the Celtic support. He is going to be a Celtic legend if he continues the way he is going.

Gradually, Milan began to creep further into the Celtic half, and their movement was somewhat admirable. Brazillian, Serginho rattled the bar midway through the first half, and Celtic could breathe again.

News filtered through that Shakhtar had taken a 2-0 lead against Barcelona, so we had to win the game to stay in Europe this season.

Celts continued to attack and as the half went on, we were playing better. John Hartson latched onto a Jackie McNamara cross and his half-volley produced a superb save from Dida in the Milan goal.

We were unlucky just before half time when a scramble in the box saw Stan Petrov's shot blocked, prior to Neil Lennon blasting the ball over the bar.

At half time, an idiot from the North Stand of the Celtic support was somehow allowed to wander onto the field. He received no reaction whatsoever from the Celtic fans, but at a time when UEFA are closely monitoring our stadium's safety, why is a clown like this allowed to stroll onto the pitch at half time, unchallenged? This will probably result in a hefty fine for the club from UEFA. Now I see why it is so easy to get a job as a steward.

We started the second half brightly but we needed change. If Chris Sutton had not lost his concentration, we would have done better when he found himself latching onto a John Hartson pass.

Henri Camara replaced Joos Valgaeren, forcing Chris Sutton into midfield and Alan Thompson to left-back. Camara done nothing. Juninho also made an appearance, and should have been gven more time to show us what he can do.

We pushed and pushed but never really had another decent chance in the game. Part of the plan was obviously not to lose a goal and we done that well, but we lacked ideas up-front.

It was great to see the Celtic fans still singing at the end of the game, in recognition of the players' efforts in the tournament this season. The arseholes who leave early didn't even have the courtesy to applaud the team off the park.

Too many players were poor tonight. Neil Lennon picked up another stupid booking for arguing with the referee over a correct decision by the referee. Magnus Hedman does not communicate enough with the defence and the players obviously have no confidence in him. He has to go.

Alan Thompson looks to be sufferring from a dip in confidence and is playing terrible. He is struggling to even pick out a decent pass these days, but we must get behind him as he is better than this. Chris Sutton does not look interested - in tonight or the last three or four games. His partnership with John Hartson up-front is not working and is never going to work.

Henri Camara has got to go. He has had his chance and he is gradually looking like a poor man's Momo Sylla! We are wasting our money with this character and the quicker he leaves the better.

So we are out of Europe, but our heads remain up. A 0-0 draw against the Italian Champions is hardly the worst result in the world! We now have to concentrate on retaining the SPL title. We travel to Dunfermline on Sunday, where I can't wait to give The Bhoys a standing ovation at the start of the game. They deserve it.
