Sheridan: I'll prove boss was right to pick me

Sheridan battled valiantly with Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic for over an hour before being replaced by Massimo Donati and with all the big bhoys still on the injury list it looks like he'll again line up alongside Scott McDonald when the Celts take on Motherwell today.

"Before the game one of the lads said I was playing against the two best defenders in the world and said to me, 'You have nothing to lose, only good can come from it," said Sheridan "If you do well then it will look even better because of how good the two of them are. I knew how good they were beforehand but that gave me confidence."

"That's what you want, you want to play against the best in the world." the young Irishman continued "It's been a bit of a step up and everything is at the top level. You have to be quicker and stronger on the ball. I didn't think I would be playing this much but obviously injuries happen in football, as I know from last year, and you just have to take your chances when they come."

"I played a lot of Gaelic football when I was younger but then I started playing soccer in Dublin and was getting into Ireland squads and I knew then I had to take it more seriously and it started to edge ahead of Gaelic." he said "My first season with Celtic was fine. But last season, my second year here, I don' t know what happened. It was just bad luck with the injuries, I suppose. Thankfully, I'm over that now. Initially, I had a hip operation, then I had a recurring hamstring problem but I've been fine since."

Cillian has settled well at Celtic and in Glasgow "For a while, it was tough being away from home." he said "But the digs I was in made you feel part of the family and that was brilliant. Everyone at the club was very welcoming and made me feel at home over here. I was fine and it became an easy transition because people here are like Irish people."

The youngster thought that he had every chance of playing on Wednesday because of Celtic's horrendous injury problems "I was told I was playing against Manchester United on Wednesday morning, just before training but I wouldn't say it was a surprise. I knew there was a chance because we had to go for it and play two up front and it was a toss-up between Ben Hutchinson and me for the job up front and I'm glad I got the nod. It has been a brilliant reaction from back home. I've been getting texts and calls coming through from my family and friends."

Now Cillian wants to prove he has the ability to make himself a permanent fixture in this Celtic side "The manager has allowed me to play against the best team in the world as part of my learning curve and I have to kick on from here. He's shown faith in me and now I have to repay that by proving I have the ability to make it at Celtic."
