Rangers' Racist Support

Presumably, there will be several readers to this site who are confused by this article's headline. This is due to the fact that blatant racism, which exists in Rangers' bile support is completely ignored by the Scottish media.

But the fact of the matter is that every time Rangers play Celtic, be it at Parkhead or Ibrox, cowardly racism floods from the stands. This is not a new thing, it has been going on for years, yet not one journalist, commentator or reporter in this country have the balls to pass comment on it.

Two weeks ago, Ron Atkinson was heard on television making offensive remarks about Chelsea's Marcel Dessaily. There was an uproar within the British public, and "Racist Ron" resigned from his commentary position at ITV Sport, costing him thousands of pounds of income. The British public and media were quite right to pursue a witchhunt against Atkinson, as apparently, there is no place for racism in this establishment.

That is, all establishments outwith Ibrox.

Yesterday, Celtic and Rangers battled out the final Old Firm meeting of the current season. Celtic won the match 1-0, thanks to a last minute Chris Sutton goal. Every Sunday newspaper features Sutton's picture on the back page, and has extensive coverage of the game.  But what should have been on every newspaper's front pages, is the behaviour of Rangers supporters off the park.

Midway through the second half of the game, Fernando Ricksen was involved in a challenge with Bobo Balde, on the touchline at the Lisbon Lions Stand.  A Balde error caused the ball to run out of play, giving Rangers a corner. Sarcastic cheers were heard from the Rangers end of the ground, which is fair enough. This happens throughout games, and could be described as friendly banter between supporters.

But what followed the cheers of delight was a stomach-churning display of monkey noises aimed at Balde. Within the 7,000 or so Rangers supporters, I estimate around 4,000 fans made racist monkey-like chants. Others were seen jumping up and down, impersonating an ape. How Balde can keep the head, I do not know.

Everyone in the ground heard it. The fans, the players, the managers, the commentators for various television and radio stations, and the press. Yet there is no uproar like what we saw with Atkinson a fortnight ago.

Celtic supporters shamed themselves years ago, when Mark Walters, a black Rangers player, was subjected to racial abuse from a small minority of Celtic fans. This has been stamped out from our support, it was a one-off incident.  But what we continually see from Rangers supporters, home and away, is a display of downright abuse towards black players.

What makes the above more frightening, is the fact that Rangers have signed two players, similar to Balde in size, colour and build - Marvin Andrews and Joun Allen Boumsong.  With current players Emerson and Namouchi also of a different race, it is unbelievable how these idiots continue to embarrass themselves.

May I stress that I know many decent Rangers fans, who believe this is a disgrace to thier club. An Asian friend of a friend is a regular attender of Rangers matces home and away. I asked him how he copes with the torrent of abuse dished out to black players by guys next to him. His only option is to bite his lip and ignore it.

Have a look and a listen, the next time Bobo Balde approaches the ball in an Old Firm game. It will be interesting to see Andrews' and Boumsong's reaction to the hatred for black players amongst the Rangers support.

The bottom line is that this cannot be ignored for any longer. Rangers fans are shaming this country with thier ways, it's about time someone put a stop to it.

Or even a mention would be nice.
