Media salivating in the news that Boruc has a price tag.

Whenever a writer is faced with a storyline, it is human nature to display your opinion of the matter, whether this is shown through literal comment or via spin it is usually always apparent. None more so than in reporting of matters concerned with Scottish Football matters.

We the Celtic support are no strangers to the application of spin to our news stories, and the latest comment of the now resolved Artur Boruc contract saga is no different. Yes we may be ultra sensitive in how we react to media spin on our stories but the litany of negative headlines that we receive are certainly disproportionate to our state of affairs at the time.

The reporting of the Artur Boruc transfer saga is a prime example of this.

Lets look at the facts first of all. It has been revealed that Celtic have put a £10 Million pounds valuation on Artur Boruc in his new contract in order to secure his services or be paid handsomely should a team meet this valuation. The player himself confirmed this when he said "I am rated at close to £10m but that is not a question for me, it is a question for Celtic."

Footballers, like any other tangible asset, will have a valuation put on them by their respective ‘owners’. Whether or not this is written into the contract will vary from player to player. So when a player commits himself to an new contract and that valuation is written in when does it turn from a "Hands off" warning from other teams to a negative clause designed to lever the player from club?

From a fiscal point of view this can only be viewed as positive. We retain the services of the player and if he does leave then we will be handsomely rewarded for his loss. In footballing terms it means that we will only lose the player to a team from the upper echelons of world football that could have attracted the player for a minimal fee under the terms of his previous deal.

Put simply, this is as close as you get to a win-win situation in the uncertain world of football so quite how this £10M hands off warning to potential suitors can be interpreted as anything other than positive is beyond me, but hey that’s just my spin on the subject!

Yours in Celtic
