Aiden McGeady has today stated that he fully understands where the dissent amongst the fans comes from. Further to that, McGeady feels that if he was still a fan in the stands that he would probably be venting his displeasure too.
The wing wizard, whose own performances this season have been inconsistent to say the least, feels that the entertainment level has dropped below tolerable standards. Indeed there are many comments amongst the fans that suggest that maybe we would have been in a better position had we stuck with the manager we had. Whilst I cannot agree with this opinion per se it is quite obvious to me that we have digressed to a level lower than the one we started last seasons at. However there are many factors both on and off the pitch that can influence such a fall from grace.
Aiden had this to stay on the current situation: "The fans want to watch good football and that's not happening.
"They're entitled to do what they want and if I was in the same boat I think I'd be doing the same.
"We've been playing really poorly and just grinding out the odd result but we're really struggling. There have been a couple of matches where we've played okay but we've struggled in the last three or four.
"I don't know the reason for that. We've got the same players we've had for the past two or three years."
Aiden however feels that now is the time for the fans to turn on the manager, and any talk relating to his future is neither fair nor productive. This current situation that we find ourselves has eerie parallels with a period in our recent history where the fans ire was inspired by events behind the scenes as much as the malaise on it. My personal opinion is that the fans at this stage should be adopting the ethos of supporting the team from the mid nineties and giving the board a chance to sort out their side of things in due course.
“Any talk of putting time on the manager's head is unfair. It's all new to him because he's never been in charge of Celtic before.
"It's a big job and I think he's taken to it well.
“Things can improve and he has to be given time."
I am not sure how much time we have; surely it would make more sense to get ourselves in a position of strength as early as possible prior to any remedial action being carried out South of the River Clyde. It is obvious that the situation at Ibrox will get worse before it gets better – however it will improve at some stage. We should ensure that we are in a strong position to deal with the inevitable resurgence of the wounded animals in Govan.
In more positive news, Celtic bound South Korean midfielder Ki sung-Yong has been voted young player of the year in the Asian Football confederation Awards.
Well done Ki
