McDonald down under amongst the big boys

Manager Gordon Strachan has cited Cillian Sheridan's late arrival on the soccer scene as a cause for concern recently but the same could certainly not be said of the young Irishman's Australian mentor. Scott McDonald made his professional debut as a fourteen year-old in the National Soccer League with Gippsland Falcons and he's adamant that it did him no harm at all.

"The experience was always good" he said "Ever since I was young I had always played above my level. I always played above my age group with the bigger boys and that's the reason I am the way I am now because big boys don't bother me at all."

The education he recieved in that tough professional league meant that his combative skills were honed very early in his career. "I've always been one to get stuck in and I like the physical battle and hold my own. To start playing against men when you are still a boy, even if the standard may not be as good as here, you are still up against full-grown men and are getting battered about. It was a good experience for me and that's helped me throughout my career, playing against older players who are technically better "

Playing at that age in the National League wasn't as big a shock to Scott as some might imagine "When I was seven I was playing against ten year-olds" he said "and that's something I have to thank my father for, more than anyone else, because he pushed me that extra little bit. In saying that I always enjoyed my football anyhow so I didn't need pushed too hard"

Scott's hard work has certainly paid off and following his magnificent goal against Manchester United in the Champions League the Australian bhoy can now well and truly consider himself one of the big boys.
