Liam Miller: A Plea For Calm

Last updated : 31 March 2004 By Kevin Smith
With the Villarreal match coming up on Thursday night, and Celtic not exactly in the best of states as far as player availability is concerned, it has been suggested that Liam Miller may start and certainly feature during the Hearts game on Saturday.

This will be Miller's first appearance at Celtic Park since his announcement of signing a pre-contract agreement with Manchester United in December. He appeared as a substitute in both games last week, at Ibrox and previously in Barcelona.

There was certainly a mixed reaction at Ibrox on Sunday as he entered the field of play; a reaction I didn't notice in the Nou Camp. Several fans opted to boo the Irishman, but most were shouted down by other Celtic fans.

We do not want to embarrass ourselves and boo him if he plays on Saturday. This will lower us down to the level of certain other clubs. Booing and jeering a Celtic player is a disgrace and if anyone does so they should walk out of Celtic Park feeling ashamed of themselves.

Certainly, what Liam Miller done was wrong. Celtic pampered him through several years of his injury plagued career and he was an overnight hero amongst the Celtic support. I have no problem with a Celtic player leaving the club to fulfil his ambitions and play for a club like Manchester United, but it was the sneaky way in which he approached it which annoys me.

I urge fans going to Saturday's game to keep the head and don't lose the place with Miller if he does somethign wrong. If you still feel angry towards him then simply sit in silence - do not cheer him and certainly do not boo him. The guy is wearing The Hoops and if anything should be encouraged - not for what he has decided to do but for where he is at present.

We are the best support in the world - don't ruin it on Saturday.
