Don't take Celtic fans for granted McGlone warns Desmond and co.

Matt McGlone - a warning for the plc
Fed up at being taken for granted by an incompetent boardroom who saw them as little more than turnstile fodder a group of Celtic fans got together in 1993 to form a pressure group called 'Celts for Change'.

Matt McGlone was the editor of the 'Once a Tim' fanzine and a prime mover of 'Celts for Change' as the group helped pave the way for Fergus McCann's takeover of the club in 1994.

The simmering unrest amongst the support had became a tangible force as they watched Celtic deteriorate before their eyes and this power was harnessed by Celts for Change to help drive out an inept board that had led us to the brink of bankruptcy.

Dermot Desmond, John Reid and Peter Lawwell may insist that the club is being run with a great degree of financial responsibility today, and they may scoff at our city rivals being run by the bank, but they should be aware that such fiscal prudence is worthless if the 'customer' loses all desire for the downsized product on offer. Given the attendance figures this season so far alarm bells should be ringing in the Celtic Park boardroom and Matt McGlone has warned the plc to ignore the unrest within the support at their peril.

"A group of fans from Partick got in touch with me recently, asking me if I'd be interested in setting up Celts For Change II," McGlone told the Telegraph. "I'm not sure I've got the energy to go through with all that again but I said I'd be happy to meet with them and advise them. The fans are turning and if Gordon Strachan had still been the manager there would have been open revolt by now. As it is, because Mowbray is a former player, he was given time to settle in. People are losing patience, though. He's regularly been booed at the end of matches home and away and if they lose to St Mirren this weekend then the whole ground will be at it. The fans will decide if he stays or goes and crowds are going down game by game."

"The board look upon fans as cash cows." he continued. "And they think that we'll continue to turn up no matter how bad the team on the park is. They've entirely misread the mood of the support. Our loyalty has been taken for granted. Desmond rarely goes to matches and hasn't even bothered to turn up for the last two AGMs. Whenever they are asked about investing in the squad, and no one is looking for them to put the club at risk, John Reid comes out with 'Look at the state Rangers are in,' which just makes you cringe. Rangers are in a hell of a state but at the moment they have a better team than we do. They also have more spirited players in their squad than we do and it hurts to say that."

"My worry is that the anger will turn to apathy because once people stop going to games on a Saturday you don't usually get them back." McGlone concluded. "The board make no attempt to communicate with the support but if they don't strengthen the playing side in January it'll tell us all we need to know and they'll be in for a severe shock in the summer when thousands upon thousands decide that they won't be renewing their season tickets to watch more of the same."
