Daily Record: A Reminder

Last updated : 23 April 2004 By Kevin Smith
In December 2001, the Daily Record published articles taking up several pages, describing a so-called scuffle with Celtic players Neil Lennon, Joos Valgaeren and Bobby Petta, in Newcastle. The Record had sent photographers and reporters down there, to follow the Celtic on their Christmas night out.

The Daily Record printed pictures of the three Celts, under the headline 'Thugs and Thieves.' Since then, all charges of theft and assault were dropped by the Daily Record, an apology was made and Neil Lennon has become the first player to take legal action. His quest still continues.

Since that day, Celtic supporters have been boycotting the newspaper, having been urged to do so by the club. From all reports, the Daily Record's sales have fell dramatically, and the head of the company at the time of the Newcastle incident, has resigned.

The 2001 incident was not the first time this excuse of a newspaper has let down the Celtic support. For years it has been giving our team bad press, false leads and once compared our Managing Director of the time, Fergus McCann, to Saddam Hussein.

This is just a reminder to all Celtic supporters that the boycott continues. It will never stop. The Daily Record do not deserve our custom and we shall not give in to their phoney pro-Celtic Seville books, Champions pull-outs and claiming to be the organisers of the "Official Celtic Party" in Barcelona.

It angers me to see copies of the rag lying in and around Celtic Park, and Celtic fans on the Messageboard discussing what they read in that day's issue. The newspaper cleary has an anti-Celtic agenda, and anyone who buys a copy of it should be ashamed.  And yes, nipping on for a quick visit to their website is the same as buying a copy from the local newsagents!

United we stand!
