Come On The Hoops DVD Review

Last updated : 17 December 2004 By Kevin Smith
Released just in time for the Christmas rush is Celtic's new DVD. I picked up a copy of 'The Greatest Celtic Games In The World...Ever!' the other day, here is a review of the DVD for anyone who is having second thoughts on buying it.

First of all, Celtic videos and DVDs are usually of a high standard. In recent times, 'Lord Of The Wing,' 'A Gift From God,' and 'Green And Whitewash' have all been excellent purchases, and I had no worries about buying their latest release.

The title of the DVD is pretty naff; as you can see it was copied from the old CD compilations on the 90's, 'The Greatest Christmas Album In The World...Ever!' and so on.

The front cover does not give much away and I was interested to see what games were chosen and how it was done.

A few months ago, the Celtic website done a vote for the supporters' favourite games ever. This is where they found the games to show on this DVD.
I don't imagine making this kind of film would be the easiest of tasks, and fair play to Celtic, they have done a good job.

The DVD is split up into eight categories: League Cup, Scottish Cup, UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cup, Rangers, European Cup, League Clincher and Greatest Game Ever. Each category is introduced by Martin O'Neill and a few clips, showing the goals from the game, are shown, before the winner of that category, which for most, gets about six or seven minutes.

Obviously, there are always going to be complaints about what games were chosen and what games should have been included but weren't - not everyone is ever going tobe happy. But there are some truly baffling selections in some of the categories.

I am not going to tell you the winner of each category, in case you want to buy it and I have just spoiled the full thing.

The DVD can obviously only show footage from not so long ago, as there are plenty games which I am sure should have been included, but couldn't be due to lack of footage and the fact that some fans won't remember the games.
It is also disappointing that Celtic felt the need to overdub some of the crowd noises again, as they did in the final game on the Whitewash DVD. Archie MacPherson and a couple of others have been drafted in to commentate on some games, when we would have been best off without them pretending they are sitting at the game.

It is odd that the 3-3 Old Firm game at Celtic Park in 2003 is selected but the 3-0 win at Ibrox in 2001 isn't. Last season's Scottish Cup Final isn't on it, neither is the Coca Cola Cup win of 1997.

It seems that the fans who voted were of a younger age, hence the DVD showing loads of recent games which weren't a patch on ones from several years ago.

Anyway, the DVD is a great buy and a recommended stocking filler. Everyone should have the footage that is shown on the DVD, as the memories included are superb.

I'm off to watch it again.
