Celtic 2-4 Chelsea

With names like Momo Sylla, Joos Valgaeren and the inexperienced Ross Wallace, Stephen McManus and Craig Beattie in the starting line-up, it was always going to be a challenge for Celtic, against Jose Mourinho's multi-million pound Chelsea squad.

The 4-2 scoreline does not reflect Celtic's performance, as we battled and fought through difficult circumstances. Beattie scored Celtic's two goals and was undoubtedly Celtic's Man of the Match.

Just sitting in the stand yesterday was a task - how the players could have ran around for 90 minutes is beyond me.

Celts started well, and Craig Beattie could have earned us a penalty, but play was waved on by the US referee.

After 16 minutes, Chelsea took the lead, against the run of play. New signing Smertin rattled home a bullet of a shot from 25 yards, the Celtic defence guilty of backing off.

Craig Beattie - staking his claim for Henrik Larsson replacement - pulled the lead back 11 minutes later, when Momo Sylla neatly set him up with a nice pass. The goal certainly gave the big striker confidence, maybe this will be the start of great things in his Celtic career.

Celtic had a couple of chances to take the lead but the scoreline was 1-1 at half time. John Robertson was in charge as Martin O'Neill is at home alongside his sick wife, and Robertson rung the changes during the interval. John Hartson, Stephen Pearson, Jackie McNamara and Ulrik Laursen replaced Didier Agathe, Joos Valgaeren, Momo Sylla and Stephen McManus.

In truth, we were all over the place for the first 15 minutes of the second period, and the American based Celtic fans were starting to get anxious.

It was only a matter of time before Chelsea took the lead, and it was Eidur Gudjonsen who got his name on the scoresheet. The Celtic defence looked in a state of shock as the got the run around.

Mateja Kezman, Chelsea's new signing from PSV Eindhoven, scored Chelsea's two others, his second coming in the last minute of the game.

Craig Beattie secured his brace in between times, when he netted from a Bobby Petta corner. Petta was taken off injured though, and Celtic finished the game with ten men.

Okay, it was only a friendly but we could easily draw a team like Chelsea in the Champions League. We are simply not ready for that yet. New signings must be made before the deadline of August 31.

Next up are Liverpool, who we play on Tuesday in East Hartford.
