Billy McNeil and Celtic under fire

Last updated : 23 October 2006 By Jack Kennedy
Billy McNeill and Celtic Fc have came under heavy criticism after the launch of the new Celtic poker room. The Celtic Legend features in a cringeworthy advertisement extolling the virtues of Celtic poker and urging Celtic fans to gamble their money.

Many fans feel that this is an unnaceptable advertisement and that the Celtic Legend should not be using his position to urge Celtic fans to gamble and feel there is a danger that Low income or Gambling addicted supporters will follow McNeills prompts and feed their habit or even worse become addicted due to Their Beloved team asking them to gamble.

The poker site in question is a cage or skin of a well known and reputable poker network and Celtic fans will be automatically able to play against thousands of people already on the network. Players will be playing against people who are NOT Celtic supporters and Celtic's advertising does tend to make players think that it is ONLY fellow Celts they will be playing with which is far from the case.

There will however be Celtic only competitions on the Celtic poker network but the vast majority of games are open to all.

There is a fear that underage players will want to be involved after seeing their sporting hero ask fans to join the poker room and advertising says that the club will benefit financially by getting players to join. Players can deposit by using Neteller which requires no physical proof of age and of course because it is an online site customers do not need to enter pin codes when depositing by credit card.

Instead of fans alking about 4-4-2 or if wingbacks should track back quicker, you might actually be sitting in paradise listening to the people next to discussing the fact that they had a small pocket pair and only had 5 times the big blind so went all in against an aggressive chipleader because they were holding a pocket pair out of position and even if the other guy had Ace King they still had a 54 percent chance of winning the hand by going all in pre-flop.

Not quite the same is it?

Celtic FC encouraging gambling or are they just moving with the times? Should the man who lifted The European cup be extolling the virtues of gambling? Tell us what you think on our messageboard
