REFEREES AND WHAT THEY MEAN!!!!!!

Last updated : 06 July 2006 By Michael Lawlor

It's been a World Cup full of incident with a lot of talking points. Most notably referees have come under some serious scrutiny. Yer man down south in Engerland one Mr Poll was one of the whistle blowers to get ‘poll-axed' (sorry) by the men at the top table. The Premiership we are told is "the league" and this is their representative at the biggest event on the planet. It just happens to be a football event! Although I'm carrying a few extra pounds (stones- the wife keeps telling me!!), three yellow cards in a game of football I might have a chance if I make a comeback, and, that man the English call, the ‘model ref' is officiating. This is the guy who less than a year ago was hopping off cars in public while on a refereeing seminar, full of drink. Blend in well with the ‘huns', on an end of season p*** up around February. He was representing his country. Well the team were well off the mark so Graham carried on with the trend. He almost lasted as long as his countrymen. I wonder will he still be Mr MODEL REF next season.

16 referees were sent home and all had bad performances. Some players could have joined them, most notably the whole England team. The Russian official, whose name escapes me, I think it was something like "in off de red". He dished out 20 cards which was a joke! The top table of FIFA needs to look at the rule book long and hard. The age limit needs to be re-dressed. One Mr Collina was asked to retire when he reached the ‘youthful ‘age of 45 years. Shame on you Mr Blatter and friends.

My point albeit a brief one is when a ref has a good game no-one gets to hear about him. So the names Benito Archundia (Mexico)Italy v Germany, Roberto Rosseti (Italy) France v Spain and maybe the official for the Brazil v France should receive credit for a good game. As ‘at the end of the day' they are only amateurs in a professional sport.

When we hear about the crazy wages some of these so called footballers are on you start to wonder. Do they deserve it? Should they be deducted after a bad day at the office? When they have their good days the world and its friend gets to hear about it. The old saying, when a referee isn't noticed it means he had a good game!! They are human after all. If they were not there we would have no game!

I am not actually saying go out and give them a big hug. But give them a little bit of respect.
